How to Turn Off Active Status on TikTok—and What Changes

In current versions that offer the control, open TikTok, tap Profile, open the menu, then choose Settings and privacy. Open Privacy, find Activity Status, and switch it off. TikTok currently describes the setting as off by default, but you should inspect your account rather than assuming its state. TikTok also cautions that a green dot may remain visible for a while after someone becomes inactive. That makes it unsuitable for proving that someone saw a message, ignored a request, or was continuously using the app. Background app activity, network timing, display delay, and the platform's own status logic can make a simple indicator look more exact than it is.

Current official support describes last-active information as available only for a limited period. Treat that period as a product rule TikTok can revise, not a permanent archive. Activity Status is separate from read indicators, post views, Profile view history, Story viewers, LIVE presence, likes, comments, and device-login records.

TikTok currently limits this feature to mutual followers: people you follow who also follow you. Both people must have Activity Status turned on for either person to see the other's status through the feature. If only one has it enabled, TikTok says neither sees the other's indicator. This mutual design narrows the audience but still deserves a deliberate choice.

Official support currently states an age requirement for access. Eligibility and local availability can change, and recorded account age or supervised settings can affect whether the control appears. Do not assume that a person outside the mutual-follower relationship has no other clue that you are present. Posting, liking, commenting, following, joining a LIVE, viewing some content surfaces, replying to a message, or triggering a typing or read indicator can disclose recent activity separately. Activity Status governs one feature, not every timestamp or interaction on TikTok.

Switching it off reduces one form of social presence pressure. Friends, colleagues, customers, or collaborators who qualify will no longer get that feature's online or last-active signal from you, and you stop checking theirs. This can make boundaries clearer when you do not want an app indicator to imply that you are available for a conversation.

The cost is the same loss of context. You cannot use Activity Status to decide whether a mutual follower may be available, and the missing indicator tells you nothing about their actual behavior. If a team relies on it to coordinate urgent work, replace it with an explicit availability channel rather than asking everyone to sacrifice a privacy preference.

For younger users, families should use age-appropriate privacy and safety settings rather than treating an online dot as supervision. There is no responsible basis for calling the setting a stealth mode. It hides the Activity Status indicator according to TikTok's current feature rules, but other visible actions remain visible. If you open a Story, like a post, follow an account, comment, send a message, or participate in a LIVE, that surface may identify you or create a notification independently.

The setting also does not make your connection anonymous to TikTok. The platform can process device, account, interaction, and security information under its policies and applicable law. Network administrators, device owners, family controls, or operating-system features may also expose usage in ways unrelated to TikTok's social indicator.

If your safety depends on preventing a particular person from seeing or contacting you, review the account's broader privacy, messaging, mention, comment, follow, block, and security controls. Do not rely on a missing green dot as the only protective step. Save evidence and seek appropriate support when harassment or stalking is involved.

A missing Activity Status control can reflect age eligibility, a regional difference, an older app build, a supervised experience, account rollout, or a changed interface. First confirm that you are signed into the account you intend to change. Update TikTok from the device's trusted store, restart the app, and search the Privacy menu for activity-related wording.

If the feature appeared previously and vanished, review official support and any account notices before assuming a bug. Each control governs a different path, so one switch cannot substitute for the audit.

Review Profile view history separately because it has its own reciprocal behavior. Inspect logged-in devices and recovery methods as a security step. For a teen account, use TikTok's age-appropriate settings and Family Pairing where suitable; feature labels and eligibility vary, so follow the current in-app explanation.

Repeat the audit after major updates, account-role changes, or a shift from personal to public-facing use. Take screenshots of choices only for your own records and store them securely. A privacy setup is a current decision, not a one-time promise that the platform or your needs will never change.
