How to reset TikTok FYP with the official Refresh your For You feed option, plus Not interested, keyword filters, topics, and what a refresh won't change.

What resetting your TikTok FYP actually means

Your For You feed is personalized from your activity: what you watch, like, share, comment on, skip, and follow. Over months, those signals can lock the feed onto interests you have outgrown, a topic you binged once, or content you never wanted in the first place. Resetting usually means one of two things: wiping the slate and starting over, or steering away from a few specific themes.

TikTok offers an official tool for the first goal, called Refresh your For You feed, and several smaller controls for the second: Not interested, keyword filters, Manage topics, and Restricted Mode. They work best together. How the recommendation system ranks content is a separate subject, covered in our guide to the TikTok algorithm; this guide sticks to the controls you can change yourself.

How to refresh your For You feed from settings

TikTok's Help Center describes two routes to the refresh option. The settings route is the one documented without a regional caveat, so try it first. It works from the main TikTok app on your phone. Menu labels and their order can change between app versions and regions; if your screen looks different, update the app from the official store and look for the same wording under Content preferences.

Before confirming, be sure you want a full refresh. TikTok states that once you refresh the feed, it cannot be undone. If only one topic or creator is bothering you, the narrower tools later in this guide are reversible and far less disruptive, and they keep the parts of your feed you still enjoy. The settings path TikTok documents looks like this:

  • In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
  • Tap the Menu button at the top.
  • Tap Settings and privacy, then tap Content preferences.
  • Tap Refresh your For You feed and follow the steps on screen.

How to refresh from a post in your feed

In select regions, TikTok also lets you start a refresh directly from the For You feed. It saves a trip into settings when an unwanted post is already on screen. This route goes through the panel that explains why a post was recommended to you, which is worth a look on its own because it lists reasons such as similar posts you engaged with, popularity in your country, or following the creator.

TikTok's help pages label that option Why this video in some places and Why this post in others, so look for whichever appears in your version. Some regions show only the settings route, and some app versions may not show the in-feed shortcut at all. If neither label shows up, use the settings route instead. The result is the same, and the warning that the refresh cannot be undone applies here too.

  • Press and hold a post in the For You feed, or tap the Share button.
  • Tap Why this video (or Why this post).
  • Tap Adjust your For You.
  • Tap Refresh your For You feed and follow the steps on screen.

What a refresh does and does not change

When TikTok announced the feature in March 2023, it said a refresh lets you view your For You feed as if you had just signed up, with recommendations rebuilding from new interactions. The Help Center adds that you will first be shown some popular content, and your likes and comments on it help reshape what comes next. In other words, the refresh empties the feed; you refill it.

The scope is narrow by design. TikTok says only the For You feed is affected, and your Following feed, profile, inbox, and ads are not. Its announcement also says a refresh will not override settings you already enabled or change accounts you follow. That means your keyword filters stay in place, creators you follow can still appear, and your own posts and followers are untouched. It does nothing for the reach of your own videos either, and paid options to buy TikTok views only change a visible count, not what TikTok recommends.

  • Changes: the recommendations in your For You feed.
  • Stays the same: your Following feed, profile, inbox, and ads.
  • Stays the same: keyword filters and other settings you already chose.
  • Stays the same: the accounts you follow.
  • Cannot be done: undoing the refresh after you confirm it.

Retrain the feed in the first few days

A refreshed feed is only a starting point, and whatever you do next becomes the new signal. TikTok's help pages say interactions such as likes, shares, comments, and time spent watching generally carry the most weight in the For You feed. Watch the videos you actually want in full, like and save the good ones, and swipe past anything off-topic quickly rather than finishing it out of curiosity.

Search is a signal too, so look up the subjects you want more of and follow a few creators who make them. Be patient: TikTok notes that feeds also mix in new creators and topics on purpose, so a stray video does not mean the refresh failed. If an old theme returns in force, check your recent viewing first, because a single late-night binge can undo careful habits.

Use Not interested on posts you do not want

Not interested is the most precise everyday tool. TikTok says marking a post this way shows you fewer posts like it, and its announcement described using the option to skip future videos from a particular creator or ones that use a particular sound. Use it the moment an unwanted post appears, not after watching it through, since the watch itself is also a signal.

The same panel can filter hashtags. TikTok's help pages describe tapping Details after Not interested, choosing the option you prefer, then tapping Details again to see the post's hashtags and selecting the ones to filter. On a web browser, TikTok's steps go through the post's Report button instead: choose Other, then I'm not interested in this content, then Submit. If marked posts keep returning, TikTok asks for feedback with screenshots.

  • Press and hold the post, or tap the Share button on the side.
  • Tap Not interested.
  • Tap Details to choose a more specific option, such as a creator or sound.
  • Tap Details again to list the post's hashtags, select any to filter, then tap Submit.

Filter keywords and hashtags from your feeds

Keyword filters remove posts containing words, their variations, and hashtags you choose. TikTok's help pages say filters can apply to supported feeds such as For You and Following, and you pick which feed each keyword covers. You can add up to 100 keywords, and a Smart filter setting can catch similar terms and variations, although TikTok notes that not every variation is listed and certain keywords cannot be filtered.

TikTok also says that depending on where you signed up, you may not be able to filter keywords in some feeds. Filters are the tool to reach for when a whole subject keeps reappearing, such as a show you have not finished yet, a diet trend, or a news story you need a break from. Edit or delete a keyword from the same screen later.

  • In the TikTok app, tap Profile, then the Menu button at the top.
  • Tap Settings and privacy, then Content preferences.
  • Tap Filter keywords, then Add keyword.
  • Enter a word or hashtag, choose the feeds it applies to, then tap Save.

Manage topics and Restricted Mode

Manage topics lets you adjust how much of each broad category, such as sports or food and drinks, appears in your For You feed. Go to Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Content preferences, then Manage topics, move each slider, and tap Save. TikTok says changes only affect the For You feed and may take some time to show, so pair them with Not interested in the meantime.

Restricted Mode is different: it limits content that may not be comfortable for everyone, such as mature or complex themes. It sits under Content preferences, uses a passcode, and must be turned on separately for each account. TikTok notes it also removes access to the Following feed, going LIVE, and gifting on LIVE. Parents can manage it for teens through Family Pairing.

If the refresh option is missing or your feed drifts back

If you cannot find Refresh your For You feed, update TikTok from the official app store, restart the app, clear the TikTok cache if the app is misbehaving, and check under Content preferences again. The in-feed route only exists in select regions, so its absence alone is not a problem. Do not install third-party apps or share your login with services that promise to reset your account; nothing outside TikTok's own settings can do it.

If a refresh seems to show the same posts, TikTok asks you to send feedback through Need more help, noting whether the issue is on For You or Following and whether you see the same or different posts. Clearing search history is another light step: tap Search, then Clear search next to an entry. In some regions, including the EU, TikTok also documents a setting to turn off personalized feeds entirely.

A fresh feed for you is not fresh reach for your videos

Refreshing your For You feed changes what TikTok shows you as a viewer. It does not reset, boost, or clear the distribution of videos you have posted. If your real worry is low views on your own content, the fix sits in the opening seconds, the topic, and whether people watch to the end.

Some creators also add a small visible starting view count to a new post. That is a presentation choice only: it does not influence recommendations, it cannot stand in for content people choose to watch, and paid engagement can conflict with TikTok's rules on inauthentic activity. Treat it as optional at most.

Frequently asked questions

Can you reset your FYP on TikTok?
Yes. TikTok has an official Refresh your For You feed option. Go to Profile, tap the Menu button, choose Settings and privacy, then Content preferences, and tap Refresh your For You feed. Follow the steps on screen. TikTok says a refresh cannot be undone once you confirm it.
Does refreshing your For You feed delete your likes or followers?
No. TikTok says a refresh only affects the For You feed. Your Following feed, profile, inbox, and ads are not changed, and the accounts you follow stay the same. Settings you already turned on, such as keyword filters, also remain in place after the refresh.
Why don't I see the option to refresh my TikTok For You feed?
Update the app and look under Settings and privacy, then Content preferences, since labels can vary by version and region. The route that starts from a post in your feed is only available in select regions. If the option is still missing, report it through Need more help in the app.
How long does it take for a TikTok FYP reset to work?
The refresh itself is immediate, and TikTok first shows you some popular content. How quickly the feed feels personal again depends on how you interact with it. Watching, liking, commenting, and searching for the topics you want give the system clear signals over the following days.
Does clearing watch history reset the TikTok algorithm?
TikTok's help pages do not describe clearing watch history as a way to reset recommendations. The documented tools for changing your feed are Refresh your For You feed, Not interested, Filter keywords, and Manage topics. Treat history clean-ups as a privacy choice rather than a reset.
Will refreshing my FYP affect the views on my own videos?
No. Refreshing changes what TikTok recommends to you as a viewer. It does not reset or change how your own posts are distributed to other people. Reach on your videos still depends on whether viewers watch, engage, and keep coming back to your content.
