How to clear TikTok cache in the app

TikTok has a built-in tool for this, and the steps are the same on iPhone and Android. TikTok's Help Center describes the path as Profile, then the Menu button, then Settings and privacy, then Free up space. You may need to scroll down to find Free up space. On that screen, tap Clear next to Cache, then tap Clear again to confirm.

The process takes a few seconds, and the cache figure should drop to zero or close to it. You stay signed in, and nothing visible on your profile changes. TikTok renames and moves menu items from time to time, so when the wording on your phone does not match, use the search bar inside Settings and privacy and type cache or space to jump straight to the right screen.

  • Tap Profile at the bottom of the app
  • Tap the Menu button at the top, then Settings and privacy
  • Scroll to and tap Free up space
  • Tap Clear next to Cache, then Clear again to confirm

What the Free up space screen shows

The Free up space screen lists separate storage items, each with its own action. TikTok's help page describes three: Cache, Downloads, and Drafts. Cache and Downloads each have a Clear button. Drafts has a Manage button instead, which opens your drafts so you can select individual ones and tap Delete. Each row shows how much space it currently uses, which helps you decide where to start.

Those separate controls matter. Clearing the cache is a different action from clearing downloads, and neither one is the drafts control. Read the label beside the button before tapping, especially if you are cleaning up quickly. If Downloads holds files you still want, save copies elsewhere before clearing that row, because the app may not keep them afterward. A quick screenshot of the screen helps you compare.

What clearing the cache deletes and what it keeps

TikTok describes the cache as temporary files. In practice that means video data, images, and other content the app stored on your phone so feeds and profiles load faster. Clearing it removes that local copy. The app rebuilds the cache as you keep scrolling, so the first few videos after clearing may load slightly slower than usual, and the storage figure will grow again over time.

Your account itself lives on TikTok's servers, not in the cache. Posted videos, followers, likes, comments, and direct messages are not stored only on your phone, so clearing the cache does not remove them. Drafts appear as their own item on the Free up space screen with a separate delete flow, which is the clearest sign that the cache button does not target them. If a draft is irreplaceable, save a copy first anyway.

  • Removed: temporary files the app stored to speed up loading
  • Kept: your account, posted videos, followers, and messages
  • Separate rows: Downloads and Drafts, each with its own control
  • Unaffected: your watch history and search history, managed elsewhere

Clearing TikTok cache through Android settings

Android also lets you clear an app's cache from the phone's own settings. The path is usually Settings, then Apps, then TikTok, then Storage or Storage and cache, then Clear cache. Names vary between manufacturers and Android versions, so on some phones you may need to open App management or See all apps first. This option is useful if TikTok crashes before you can reach its own menus.

On the same screen you will see a second button, usually called Clear storage or Clear data. That is a much bigger step. It wipes all of TikTok's local data on the phone, signs you out, resets app preferences, and can remove anything kept only on the device, which may include drafts. Tap Clear cache, not Clear storage, unless you have backed up what you need.

Clearing TikTok cache on an iPhone

iPhones do not have a system button that clears a single app's cache, so the in-app Free up space tool is the right method on iOS. To see how much room TikTok takes, open Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage, and tap TikTok. The screen splits the total into the app's size and its documents and data, which is where most of the cache sits.

That screen offers Offload App and Delete App. Apple describes offloading as removing the app while keeping its documents and data, so it frees the space taken by the app itself but not the cached data. Delete App removes the app and its data together. Because deletion can take locally stored drafts with it, it is the riskier choice and should come only after a backup.

When clearing the cache actually helps

The two main reasons are storage and glitches. TikTok's troubleshooting guidance recommends clearing the app cache when TikTok takes up too much storage or when temporary files may be causing problems. Its help pages also list clearing the cache as a step when uploads fail or when search results do not appear, alongside switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, restarting, and updating.

Clearing the cache does not repair account-level problems. It will not restore a removed video, lift a restriction, change your follower count, or reset your For You feed, because those things are decided on TikTok's side. If the app still misbehaves after clearing, restart the phone, install the latest version, and use the Report a problem option inside the app.

  • Your phone warns that storage is almost full
  • Videos freeze, stutter, or show blank screens
  • Uploads stall or fail even on a strong connection
  • Search or comments do not load after an update

Clear watch history and search history separately

Watch history and search history are not part of the cache. For search history, TikTok's help page says to tap the Search button at the top, then tap Clear search next to an entry you want to remove. Your watch history is reached through Settings and privacy, where TikTok groups account activity tools under Activity center. Labels and options there vary by region and version.

Deleting these histories affects what you see in lists and suggestions; it does not free meaningful storage. If your goal is to change the kind of videos in your feed, TikTok also offers a Refresh your For You feed option, described in its Help Center. Treat each of these as a separate choice rather than part of routine storage cleanup.

Be careful before reinstalling TikTok

Reinstalling is a common next step when an app keeps glitching, but on TikTok it carries a specific risk. Drafts are widely reported to be stored on the device rather than in your account, so deleting the app, using Clear storage on Android, switching phones, or resetting the device can remove them for good. Clear the cache and restart first; those steps touch nothing you created.

If you do need to reinstall, protect your drafts beforehand. One approach is to open each draft and post it with the privacy setting set to Only you, which keeps it in your account. TikTok notes that a new post keeps the privacy setting of your previous post, so check that setting carefully the next time you post publicly. Otherwise a new video could go out privately by mistake.

If Free up space is missing or the cache keeps coming back

If you cannot find Free up space, update TikTok from the App Store or Google Play and look again near the bottom of Settings and privacy, often grouped with cache and data options. The settings search bar is the quickest route. On some versions the item may appear under a slightly different name, but it will mention space, storage, or cache.

A cache that refills quickly is normal; it reflects how much you watch. If TikTok still takes up a lot of room after clearing, check the Downloads and Drafts rows, which often hold the largest files. Lowering data-heavy habits, such as saving many videos to the app, slows the growth. Clearing the cache every few weeks is reasonable if storage is tight.

A faster app does not change how many people see a post

Clearing the cache fixes storage and playback problems on your own phone. It does not reset your account, refresh your reach, or affect how TikTok distributes videos you have already posted. If views are the real concern, the hook, topic, and first seconds of each video deserve the attention.

Some creators also add a small starting view count to a public post. That only changes a visible number; it cannot make the video better, does not guarantee further distribution, and is not a ranking lever. TikTok's Community Guidelines restrict artificially boosted engagement, so consider that risk before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clear my TikTok cache?
In the TikTok app, tap Profile, tap the Menu button, choose Settings and privacy, then tap Free up space. You may need to scroll down. Tap Clear next to Cache, then tap Clear again to confirm. The steps are the same on iPhone and Android, though labels can vary by app version.
Will clearing TikTok cache delete my drafts?
TikTok lists Drafts as a separate item on the Free up space screen, with its own Manage and Delete flow, so the cache button is a different action. Even so, back up any draft you cannot replace. Reinstalling the app or using Clear storage on Android is far riskier for drafts than clearing the cache.
Does clearing cache on TikTok log you out?
Clearing the cache with TikTok's in-app Free up space tool should not sign you out. Using Clear storage or Clear data in Android settings is different: it wipes all of TikTok's local data, including your login session, so you will need to sign in again afterward.
Does clearing TikTok cache reset my For You page?
No. Recommendations are based on your activity and are handled on TikTok's side, not stored in the temporary cache files. If you want different recommendations, TikTok offers a separate Refresh your For You feed option in its settings, and you can also manage watch history and search history.
How often should I clear my TikTok cache?
There is no official schedule. Clear it when your phone is low on storage or when TikTok starts freezing, failing to load videos, or failing to upload. The cache rebuilds as you use the app, so clearing it daily brings little benefit and makes videos load slightly slower right afterward.
Why is TikTok still taking up so much storage after clearing cache?
The app itself, downloads, and drafts all take space separately from the cache. Check the Downloads and Drafts rows on the Free up space screen, and look at the app size in your phone's storage settings. Saved videos and long drafts are often the largest items.
