How to Change Your Username on TikTok (Rules and Limits)
How to change your username on TikTok in the app or on desktop, plus the 30-day limit, character rules, name vs username, and what happens to old links.

Username vs name: what each one controls
A TikTok profile has two separate identifiers. The username is the tag that starts with @, and TikTok's Help Center says it is displayed on your profile and makes up your profile link. The name, which TikTok's help pages also call a nickname, is the label other people see across TikTok, including in the For You feed, comments, and direct messages.
The distinction matters because the two follow different rules. Changing the name is cosmetic and comparatively flexible. Changing the username changes your profile address, affects how people tag and search for you, and is limited to once every 30 days. Decide which one you actually need to change before you open the editor, since many people only need a new display name.
How to change your username in the TikTok app
TikTok's current help page describes a short path. Menu labels can vary slightly by app version and region, so if something looks different on your phone, update the app from the official store first. The steps below follow the official instructions. Have the new handle chosen in advance so you are not improvising inside the editor, and make sure you are signed in to the right account if you manage more than one.
Before tapping Save, type the new handle carefully and check it letter by letter. Because the change limit is 30 days, a typo or an option you regret can stay on your profile for a month. If the app says the name is unavailable, try a variation rather than repeatedly attempting the same one. Adding an underscore or a period between words is often enough to find an open handle.
- Tap Profile at the bottom of the app.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Tap Username and enter the new username you want.
- Tap Save to confirm the change.
How to change your username on a computer
TikTok also documents a desktop route. Open the TikTok website in a desktop browser and sign in, click your profile picture in the upper corner, select View Profile, then choose Edit profile. Click your username, enter the new one, and save. The same 30-day limit and character rules apply, because the username belongs to the account rather than to the device you use. A change made on desktop shows up in the app as well.
TikTok notes that this feature is not available on TikTok Mobile Web, meaning the browser version opened on a phone. If you are on a phone, use the app instead of the mobile browser. If the desktop editor does not show the username field, refresh the page, sign out and back in, or switch to the app rather than trying a third-party tool. Never enter your TikTok login on a site that promises to rename accounts for you.
TikTok username rules: length, characters, and availability
TikTok's rules are specific, and the editor rejects names that break them. The current help page lists the limits below. Note that spaces, hyphens, emojis, and other symbols are not in the allowed set, which is why many creators use an underscore or a period to separate words in a handle that would otherwise read as one long string. Read the finished handle aloud and at a glance before saving to confirm it is easy to recognize.
Availability is a separate hurdle. TikTok says a username may be unavailable because someone else already uses it or because it is claimed by a suspended or deactivated account, and such names may not free up immediately. You also cannot change your username while your account is blocked from updating its profile. In that case no variation will work until the restriction ends.
- Length: 2 to 24 characters.
- Allowed characters: letters, numbers, underscores, and periods.
- A period cannot be the last character.
- The handle must not already be taken or held by a suspended or deactivated account.
- Changes are limited to once every 30 days.
How to change your display name on TikTok
To change the name rather than the handle, TikTok's help page says to tap Profile, tap Edit profile, tap Name, enter the new name, and tap Save. The name can be up to 30 characters, must follow the Community Guidelines, and can be changed once every 7 days, which is more flexible than the username limit. Unlike the handle, the name can include spaces, so it reads naturally.
Because the name appears on videos, comments, and messages, it is the better place for a full brand name, a first and last name, or a short descriptor. Keeping the handle stable while adjusting the name lets you refine how you present yourself without breaking your profile link or confusing people who already know where to find you. Use the 7-day window to test a wording before settling on it.
What happens to your profile link, mentions, and old handle
TikTok states that changing your username also changes your profile link. Any place you shared the old address, such as a website, an email signature, printed material, or another social profile, should be updated the same day. TikTok's help page does not promise that links containing the old handle will keep pointing to you, so do not rely on that.
TikTok also says that when you give up a username, you cannot add it to an account for a short period. After that, another person may be able to claim it, which can create confusion or impersonation risk if your audience still searches for the old tag. Tell regular viewers about the change, and do not assume older mentions or tags will update automatically.
- Update links in other bios, websites, and link-in-bio pages.
- Tell collaborators and brand partners the new handle before campaigns run.
- Pin a short video or update your bio to announce the change.
- Report impersonation through TikTok if someone claims the old handle to mislead people.
Verified accounts should not change the username directly
If your account has a verified badge, do not edit the handle yourself. TikTok's verification page lists changing the username directly, without submitting a username update request, as one of the reasons a badge may be removed. The username help page points verified account holders to TikTok's contact route for this kind of change instead. Following that route protects the badge you worked to earn.
Plan rebrands on verified accounts well ahead of any launch date, because the request goes through TikTok rather than the instant editor. Keep the name, photo, and bio consistent with the identity that was verified, and avoid transferring the account to a different owner, which TikTok also lists as a reason verification can be withdrawn. Losing Verified Business Account or Organization Account status is another listed reason.
If TikTok will not let you change your username
Most failures come from one of TikTok's documented limits. Check whether you changed the handle within the past 30 days, whether the new name uses only allowed characters, whether it ends in a period, and whether it falls inside the 2 to 24 character range. If all of those pass, the name is likely taken or reserved by another account, including one that is suspended or deactivated.
If the field is grayed out or the change fails without explanation, TikTok says the username cannot be changed while an account is blocked from updating its profile; check your account status in the app for any restriction notice. Otherwise, update the app, restart your device, and retry. If the problem persists, use the in-app Report a problem option with a screenshot of the error.
Branding tips before you choose a new handle
Pick a handle you can live with for years, since every change resets how people find and tag you. Short, pronounceable names are easier to say aloud in videos and type into search. Avoid strings of numbers or random characters that look like spam accounts, and avoid names that imitate another creator or brand, which can raise impersonation concerns and lead to reports against your account.
Check whether the same handle is free on the other platforms you use, so your audience can find you everywhere with one name. Match the display name and bio to the new identity, and keep the handle neutral enough that it still fits if your content shifts. A consistent handle is a small but durable asset for any account, and it saves you from relearning the rename process every few months.
Finish any active order before you rename
If you have placed a follower order, wait until it is fully complete before changing your username. Orders are tied to the public handle and profile link you supplied, and a rename changes that link mid-delivery, which can stall or misdirect the order. Keep the account public and the handle unchanged until delivery finishes.
Paid followers may conflict with TikTok's rules, carry platform-policy risk, and do not replace a clear brand or consistent content. No provider can guarantee retention or reach. Settle the name you plan to keep first, then decide whether any growth service fits your situation at all.
